Trails of Cold Steel - I

Description

There is a scene in the beginning of the game where protagonist Rean gets slapped by the main cast's tsundere Alisa, because he tried to shield her from a fall and ended up with his face buried in her breasts by accident. Luckily they clear up that misunderstanding rather quickly.

But whenever I come across a scene like this in anime I have to think: An unjustified and undeserved slap like this would be a great reason for a justified and well deserved tsundere spanking, wouldn't it?

--------------------------------------------------

To celebrate the upcoming PC-Version of 'Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel' on August 2nd I decided to make a series of pictures featuring characters from the game.

After Persona the 'Legend of Heroes' is probably my second most favorite JRPG franchise and I wanted to use the opportunity to show it some love with a picture each day until release.

The first Trails of Cold Steel game that's now coming to Steam is the starting point for the newest trilogy of the series and in my opinion as good a jumping on point as any.
It even comes with 50% more voiced dialogue than the original PS3 and Vita releases.

In the game the player takes the role of Rean Schwarzer, a young man starting his new life at a prestigious military academy that educates both commoners and nobles alike.
Rean soon discovers that he was selected to be a member of the experimental new Class VII, where talented young men and women of various social spheres and backgrounds are brought together to follow a new and equally experimental curriculum.
In addition to the normal academy work Class VII is send out each month to a different region of the nation and over time become more and more aware of the rising tension between various factions exerting their influence in the country.

The game has a relatively slow pace in the beginning and takes its time for world-building and character introductions, which I really like.
Instead of a 'travel the world and defeat the demon lord' kind of plot, the game takes place almost entirely inside the borders of a single nation and explores its various escalating social and political issues as well as the rising tension with neighboring countries.
For someone like me who loves detailed world building and a conflict beyond the usual good versus evil, this is an amazing experience.
Things start to escalate quickly in the later chapters of the game, at which point you're likely to care very much about the fate of these characters and places you've gotten to know so well in the beginning parts.
For me at least it worked very well.

One of the biggest selling points of the series is how lived in the world feels. Most of the NPCs have relationships and story-lines that will change and evolve over the course of the game.
These side-stories will progress regardless of whether the player is there to witness them or not, which once again adds to the feeling of a lived in world.
The characters aren't solely defined by their relationship with the protagonist, like they are so often in other games.
Your party members as well will not only have interactions with the player character but also with each other and form friendships and rivalries with other side characters over the course of the games.
It's great fun to watch these things go on and change over time in parallel to the main plot.

Game play wise it is somewhat similar to Persona, though without the time management aspect.
The game has a very firm structure with the academy serving as the hub of the adventure.
You socialize and do various things at the academy each chapter before being send of to a new destination outside where the meat of the plot and character development happens usually.
The turn based combat system is very fun and offers a lot of options to experiment and tactics to try out.

As you can might have guessed by now I love this game and this franchise.
If you are in the mood for a long JRPG and haven't tried it already I heartily recommend it.

Hahaha haha. Yeah, get her Rean. When I first saw that Alisa was a tsundere getting angry over that little accident, refused to talk or communicate with Rean for over a month, and come up with some stupid assumption that he might do something "perverted" throughout the game, I really started to dislike her. Yeah, she and Rean got over that little incident, but it still didn't change the fact that she was a jealous, short-tempered jerk to him from time to time assuming he may do something inappropriate. In my opinion, Rean x Alisa just feels freaking forced. I mean, I get it, Alisa has family issues with her mother, but that's no excuse to be a bitch to Rean about it.

I don't get why Rean x Alisa is so freaking overrated. Laura has more in common, better chemistry, and a MUCH more mutual trust and bond with Rean than Alisa does. Why wasn't she the main female lead instead? I think it would have made more sense, if you ask me. Especially since Laura is more level-headed and mature. She and Rean just feel like two peas in a pod. They both follow the way of the sword and admit that it's a part of who they are. Both of their fathers are minor lords, ruling over sections of the Erebonian Empire. They're both modest, honest, have a lot to learn, and are very honorable to the point where they only use their sportsmanship to protect their friends and those close to them. Plus, Rean is on VERY good terms with Viscount Arseid, so other than getting through a little "dad talk," I doubt there'd be any problems. Rean x Laura = Best Main Protagonist Pairing in Trails of Cold Steel.

Screw Alisa, and slightly Elise. Though, to be honest, if The Imperial Liberation Front didn't crash the Summer Festival, I would have LOVED to see what would happen if Rean decided to be Princess Alfin's dance partner, if only to see the looks on Alisa and Elise's faces. Ooh, it'd be hilarious.
